April 2005 Archives
The one time that I really want to document Finnegan's progress and I couldn't because I needed both hands to wash him.
Today we tried something different. I put him in the tub where he can sit
up and hold the rails of a T that holds him in place. I also replaced the shower head with a long hose shower head and it worked great.
After lining the tub with towels to cushion his sitting area and to prevent slipping I placed him in the seat and he held onto the rail with his chubby little hands and was ready to get the show on the road.
We were able to take a bath without any crying and I didn't get completely wet either. That's a success in my book. He looked so cute sitting in his tub that I imagined him sitting on a ride at Disneyland ready for some excitement. I think he's now ready for the highchair and we can play games with him sitting up.
Right now he's practicing his "oo" sounds and doing very well with them.
I'm laughing because the hair that is left on top of his head curled up into big loopy curls and it's quite the pompadour. He's starting to show all of his eight teeth when he smiles and it's very exciting. He likes to test them out every once in a while on my fingers and he's got so much strength in his jaw. Ouch!
That's progress for you.
This weekend Finnegan started saying, "Oooooo."
He's testing new sounds and changing the shape of his mount while vocalizing. It pretty amazing to watch him shape his mouth for a "U" sound. It looks like he's getting ready to play a woodwind instrument.
He's so amazing.
Okay imagine if you will.....
A darkened stage.
A chorus of angels singing Hallelujah rises from a whisper to a triumphant declaration of joy.
A beam of light shines onto the stage revealing a baby sleeping peacefully wrapped in his mother's arms as a blissful smile rests on her beautiful face.
That is how I feel today! Finnegan slept through the whole night with a few nursings which did not require me getting out of bed. It was absolute heaven. My baby, who has been miserable for a month while cutting eight teeth, is now resting and so am I.
There is no sweeter joy than waking from a good night's rest after a long period of restless nights and difficult days. Even the dark sunless skies of Seattle seem brighter today.
Life is good.
Four more teeth and he'll have the dirty dozen in his mouth and he just turned five months old today.
Now that I am giving Finnegan full doses of Tylenol his pain is under control and crying too. I feel better because I know he does. We slept fairly well last despite the feedings and diaper changes which are now a normal part of a good night's sleep. So today life is pretty good.
We managed to run two errands and eat a Vietnamese deli sandwich. I had been anticipating that sandwich so much that I didn't notice the chili peppers on it and wow! My gums, lips and tongue were on fire!!! To make matters worse the soda I had purchased did not have a twist off cap! I was in pain.
In an act of desperation I jumped out of the car, rummaged through Finnegan's things and drank heartily out of his sippy cup. Thank God for small favors. After I put out the fire in my mouth I noticed that a woman in the parking lot was smiling at me. I raised my cup with the funny little handles on it to her and drank the last drop.
Bon Appetite indeed!
Well, Sunday we broke down and took Finnegan in to the after hours clinic at Children's hospital because I called the nurse line about Finn's teething pain and the woman said he might have an ear infection. So we made and appointment.
During the examination the doctor said he didn't have an ear infection, but that he had another tooth coming in! Ay Caramba!!! He's doing really well considering the situation. We are giving him Tylenol for the pain and it's been working very well today. I was able to get four errands done and meet with a potential client. Hopefully, this tooth will hurry up and get here.
Finn likes his new teeth, he wants to bite my fingers all the time. He's so cute when he smiles because he's got a short fang on the upper left side and a small one starting on the right side too. Now the middle is starting to fill in.
People are so surprised when I tell them he's only five months old with a head full of teeth. One of my girlfriends has a baby and he's one year old and toothless.
With all these new teeth, now we have to start brushing his teeth. He's growing up too fast!
