We can't change it, but I don't have to like it.
Recently I was driving behind a man that had Bush- Cheney stickers on
the back of his car, and in the window he had printed a sign that read
"Thank God and Ohio." Is it any surprise that he was driving a
Cadillac STS?
On CNN this morning there was a clip about recent shutdowns in Canton,
Ohio of major manufacturing plants. Apparently the cost of labor is
too high in Ohio compared to overseas. When the manufacturing workers
ask the federal administration what they are expected to do after they
lost their job of twenty-five years, the administration answers that
the future is not secure for anyone. They stress that it will be
vitally important for everyone to complete education beyond high
school in order to be successful.
But do these numbers add up? I would expect that the ratio of
manufacturing workers to engineers or CEO's is something like 10:1.
So even if all ten of the future workers complete education beyond
high school, what will nine of them do? When the manufacturing
workers get laid off, and there is less scholarship funding to help
their children go to school, how will their children go to school?
When teen and youth programs are cut because of lack of funding, and
children sit at home watching t.v. because there are no programs in
which to be involved, how will they be motivated to do anything
besides watch t.v?
I really think the direction our country is headed is sad. However,
many Americans may be heading in the direction of Canada. Border
controls reported receiving a record number of phone calls directly
following the election from Americans inquiring about moving to
Canada, eh.
